What you'll need to make scented candles.

  • Wax - soy wax, beeswax, parafin wax bead or what's left from old candles.

  • Moulds - plastic or glass container. Ensure that the base is slightly smaller than the rim so that you can easily remove the candle from the mould.

  • Wick or a length of string.

  • Some dye disc or liquid candle dye.

  • Fragrance oils (optional) - you can use essential oils like lavender or frankincense.

  • Some old cooking utensils like a pot or a saucepan to heat the wax in or to immerse the candles in a pot of water to harden them before removing them from the mould.

  • A hot plate or a double boiler.

  • A thermometer.

  • An ice-lolly stick or a skewer to hold the wick in a central position at the top of the mould.

Candle making steps

  • Step 1 - Melt the wax in low heat in a pot.

  • Step 2 - When the temperature of the liquid wax reaches about 185°F, add the candle dye and frangrance oil into the liquid wax and gently stir the mixture.

  • Step 3 - Leave the mixture to cool to about 135°F before you pour the mixture into the mould.

  • Step 4 - While waiting for the temperature to cool, attach the wick to the centre of the base of the mould. Use a skewer or ice-lolly stick to hold the wick to the centre at the top of the mould.

  • Step 5 - When the temperature of the mixture has cooled to about 135°F, pour the mixture into the mould and leave them to stand for about 3 - 4 hours.

  • Step 6 - Before removing the candle from the mould, let it stand in a pot of cold water for about an hour to harden it further. Be careful not to wet the wick.

  • Step 7 - Trim the length of the wick to about half an inch and the candles are ready to be used.

  • Supply them to your local shops and churches.
