Dementia - There are Several Ways To Reduce Your Chances OF Getting It
Dementia is a gradual loss of mental ability resulting in loss of memory, changes in personality and loss of social ability.
It is caused by brain disaorders, such as Alzheimer's or meningitis. It can also be the result of a stroke, brain injuries, lack of blood supply to the brain and pressure on the brain.
Watch out for the symptoms of dementia which may include:
- a gradual loss of memory - having difficulty in remembering names and places, forgetting whether they have taken their medication or food, etc ...
- sudden mood changes as they are unable to control their emotions due to depression stress and brain disorders
- having problems with communication due to a decline in their ability to talk, read or write.
There are several ways to reduce your chances of getting it.
-
Stimulate and keep your mind active. Doing crossword puzzles and sudoku will help. So will playing board games with your family and friends.
-
Doing physical activities and daily exercises like gardening and walking will help to improve the blood flow to your brain. Enjoy walking holidays with your friends and family.
-
Taking up a hobby that will help you to maintain interest in the topics or activities by doing some research on the topics or travelling to participate in the activities.
-
Enrol on a self-improvement course and learn new things such as a foreign language or surfing the internet.
- Practice meditation. Meditation calms the mind and helps to reduce physical and mental stresses.
-
Join groups to socialize and interact with other people who share your interests.
Although a person’s dementia cannot be cured, there are a number of effective treatments that can help them to cope better with their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Focusing on what they can do, is better than what they can't. Support the person as much as you can and accept the situation.
You can help to cook a meal or run an errand. Think of the spouse, partner, children and grandchildren who will be affected. You may be able to do something to help one of them. Understanding the situation makes living with it easier.
