Flowers Have The Natural Energy to Boost The Well Being of Seniors
Flowers are powerful symbols and are universally used to express love, happiness, compassion/sympathy, friendship and reconciliation.
People buy flowers for all occasions. They send bouquets to express their love, happiness, support, grief, apology for a wrong doing and for many other reasons.
Researchers have also found that they can help boost the well-being of the older population who face the challenges of ageing.
Many seniors suffer from depression, dementia and social withdrawal as they get older.
Researchers at Rutgers from the State University of New Jersey have discovered that flowers ease depression, inspire interaction and refresh memory as we age. Boredom and stresses become more common as we grow older and something needs to be done to improve the quality of our lives as we age gracefully.
Tests were carried out on 104 seniors between the ages of 55 and 93, of whom 94 were women and 10 were men. They were placed in one of four groups, each receiving flowers at different intervals.
Researchers at Rutgers concluded that flowers:
- decrease depression and boost happiness and positive moods
- stimulate the brain and refresh recent memory
- inspire social interaction and encourage them to expand their social circle of family and friends.
They are also a symbol of peace or non-violence. Therefore, they inspire our inner peace and tranquility which will positively affect our well-being.
Based on these findings, it is advisable for seniors to spend more time in parks or in their own gardens where they can enjoy the colours and fragrances of bedding plants in flower beds.
Whenever possible, they should also take the opportunity to visit flower shows like the Chelsea Flowers, Hampton Court Flower Show or the Philadelphia Flower Show and enjoy the splash of colours from exciting floral displays.
You can also buy flowers from your florists and experiment with or enhance your flower arrangement skills.
