Top Football Tournaments
To Keep You Entertained

People form all over the world just love watching football, also known as soccer. It is enjoyed by over a billion people from all walks of life during the world cup finals held once in every four years.

Like many retirees, you are probably a football fan and are looking forward to an exciting match day.

English Premier League

The English Premier League is fast and exciting and has a huge worldwide audience especially in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The competition was formed on 20th February 1992 to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. It is the world's most watched football league ahead of Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga.

  • The English Premier League is made up of 20 clubs and the league season runs from August of one year to May the following year. Each team plays a total of 38 Premier League matches in the season - a home match and an away match against each of the other 19 clubs.

  • Teams get 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. They are ranked by the number of points they get from the matches they play and at the end of the season the team with the most points will be crowned champion of the English Premier League. If the points are the same then the team with a better goal differnce will clinch the title.

  • At the end of the season, the three teams at the bottom of the table will be relegated to the Football League Championship.

  • The top two teams from the Championship together with the winner of the play-offs will be promoted to the English Premier League. The play-offs will involve teams in positions from third to sixth at the end of the season.

  • The top 4 teams in the Premier League qualify to play in the UEFA Champions League. The top 3 teams will automatically qualify for the group stage while the 4th placed team will battle it out with non-champions and must win two legged matches in order to qualify for the group stage.

UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League competition, formerly known as the European Cup, is organised by UEFA since 1955 for top European football clubs. The change to the current name and format took place in 1992.

The Champions League comprises three qualifying rounds -

  • The play-off stage, where clubs not automatically qualified, play two matches against each other on a home and away knockout tie to get to the group stage.

  • Ten teams from the play-off round ties will join 22 automatic qualifiers in the 32-team group stage, divided into 8 groups of 4 teams. Teams within a group will play 2 matches (home and away) against each other. 3 points are awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage. If the points are level, then goal difference will be used to decide the ranking of the teams.

  • The knockout stage is made up of 16 teams from the group stage. At each round of the knockout stage clubs will be officially drawn to play a home and an away match against each other. The winner will be decided by points and goal difference, and if they are still level on points and goal difference, then the team with more away goals go through to the next round.

The last two teams in the final round will play a single match to decide the Champion of the UEFA Champions League. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the finalists will play an extra 30 minutes. If the score is still level after extra time, then a penalty shootout will decide the winner of the competition.

Other prominent European football leagues include the Spanish La Liga, the German Bundasliga and the Italian Serie A.
