Herbal Remedies Are A Safer Alternative to Conventional Drugs

Herbal remedies, also known as botanical medicine, is an alternative therapy that uses plants or plant extracts to treat illnesses. Herbal treatments are one of the many natural cures that can take the place of conventional drugs.

For thousands of years, man have been using herbs to treat illnesses and symptoms, ranging from the common cold to serious auto-immune deficiencies.

Eastern medical systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine have well documented use of herbal medicine. Their focus on the use of herbs and other natural healing alternatives to treat common ailments afflict the body, mind and spirit.

Some of the more commonly known herbs used in botanical medicine include:

  • aloe vera - genearlly used for the healing of burns abd wounds and has anti-ageing properties.

  • artichoke - lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels. Has diuretic properties which are good for the kidneys.

  • cranberry - helps to improve the circulatory system and provides relief for asthma patients.

  • garlic - is used for earache, prevents common cold and flu and lowers cholesterol levels

  • ginger - is good for digestion and blood circulation.

  • grapefruit - helps in losing weight and prevents obesity.

  • green tea - helps to fight cancer and cardiovascular disease.

  • honey - reduces cholesterol levels and strengthens the immune system.

With increased awareness about the harmful effects of pharmaceutical drugs, more and more people are going back to using botanical medicine for the treatment and prevention of disease.

Botanical medicine is of most benefit when it is used for the treatment of chronic and ongoing conditions. Herbal treatments take longer than conventional drugs as botanical medicine take an indirect route to the bloodstream to reach their destination, but they are safer to use with less side effects.
