Meditation Brings Inner Peace and Happiness to the Practitioner
Meditation is gaining mainstream acceptance as a beneficial preventative health program. It is an effective stress buster. Its effectiveness comes from the fact that you can achieve a state of deep relaxation in just a few minutes. When you settle down into a state of deep relaxation, the body and mind are refreshed and revitalized.
What is meditation?
It basically means awareness. The human mind is full of thoughts and ideas. It gets distracted easily and loses its awareness. There is so much going on in the human mind that it gets cluttered. As a
result of our cluttered minds, we are unable to see the wood for the trees.
How do you meditate?
You can meditate in many ways. You can meditate while you walk or while you sit in a quiet place. You can sit on the
floor or on a chair, whichever is more comfortable to you.
Whichever method you decide to choose, you need to concentrate and focus your mind on one object. It is common to maintain a one-pointed mind by focussing on one's breathe. You empty your mind of all thoughts and just concentrate on your breathe.
Breathe in slowly through your nostril. Hold the air in your lungs for a few seconds before exhaling it. Continue breathing in and out slowly as you relax. Gradually push out all thoughts from your mind by focussing on your breathe.
Keep focussing on your breathe. If you lose your concentration and get distracted by other thoughts, you can re-focus your mind by counting 1 - 10 slowly in your mind. By counting the numbers slowly, other thoughts and distractions will pushed out of your mind.
Stop meditating when you are ready to do so. Initially 5 - 10 minutes would be a good effort. You can meditate longer as you progress. Don't give up, just keep practising and you will enjoy the inner peace and happiness that it brings.
