MHS66 - A Retirement Community of Loyal School Friends

Do you know many loyal school friends sticking together to form a retirement community when they retire? If you do please tell us about it.

In the past it is rare to find loyal school mates residing in various parts of the world interacting with one another after they had left school.

However, with the advancement of modern technology which enables free and instantaneous group interaction either by emails or skype, retirement communities comprising of school friends of yesteryear are popping up everywhere.

Community members can reside in any remote part of the world and yet they are able to keep themselves up to date with community events that may be taking place half way round the world from where they are residing.

Let me introduce you to our brilliant retirement community - the Malacca High School 66 (MHS66) community - comprising of great chums who have known one another since primary school days.

Take a look at us in this class photo taken in 1962 when we were 14 years old.

See how small and timid we all were at that age. Some of us even looked slightly mal-nourished. But we were a happy and united bunch of school mates.

Fast forward the clock and look at us, 44 years later, at our mini reunion dinner in Malacca in 2006.

Didn't we all look totally relaxed and happy as a group, even after 40 odd years since we had left school?

Take a look at the picture below taken at our Grand Reunion Dinner on 19th July 2008 when we celebrated our joint 60th birthdays.

What a joy it was to have met up with so many buddies we had not seen since we left high school. There was so much catching up to do that evening, and not many of us paid much attention to the sumptuous food that was laid before us.

Our group can be described as "a retirement community made in heaven".

Sadly, we have lost a few of our beloved friends through ill health, but we still remember them fondly. They are always included in our conversations when we talk about "our good old high school days".

Our sad losses make us realise that life is fragile and short, and we must embrace every opportunity to get together to celebrate an "event".

Here are pictures of some of our fun activities:

Birthday celebrations - How often do you get three good friends sharing the same birthday?

Singalong sessions like we used to have in our younger days. It does not matter what others think of our singing, as we think we are the best.

Sharing our pot-luck dinners. No one will go hungry as we are very passionate about our food. Anyone for fish head curry?

Social gatherings and invitations to "our" children's weddings (and there have been several).

Celebrating Communal Festivities. Malaysia is a multi-cultural society and we enjoy these festivities several times a year. We celebrate New Year's eve (31st December), Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid), Deepavali (Diwali) and Christmas with our brothers of other faith.

Outings and hikes.

Many of us who have taken early retirement enjoy walking and hiking. There will be opportunities to go on walking holidays abroad when more of our members retire from their full time jobs. How about mountain biking, chaps?

Reunions in Singapore and Melbourne.

London Reunions

London is a popular destination for many of our members who enjoy London breaks, many of whom have been to this lovely city several times before. It is always a great pleasure to entertain them and their families when they are in London.

Although several of our retirement community members reside in different parts of the world, we are only an email, an sms or a phone call away from one another. We are always able to participate in any community event no matter where it is held.

We are truly very fortunate to be members of such an active and happy retirement community. Long may it continue.
